The entire purpose of thinning scissors is to (guess what) thin your hair. This is a very aptly named tool. A lot of people don’t want to change the actual style of their hair, so instead they end up using thinning scissors to get the lighter body they are looking for.

These implements go back a long time into the past, although you wouldn’t know that by reading about them in modern style magazines. You would think that they are some sort of a new invention! Nothing could be further from the truth. Humans have always had a desire to thin out their hair. But with arriving of an age where experimenting with your hair is very popular, thinning scissors became very popular.

How to Use Thinning Scissors

Using thinning scissors is really easy. In fact, you may even be able to do it all by yourself. If you’re really good you won’t even need a mirror. Nevertheless I don’t recommend either of those options. The best way to go about it (at least the first couple times) is to have someone you know cut your hair.

Basically how it works is that you (or your hairdresser) grabs a wide swath that is not too voluminous. They grab it with one hand and with the thinning scissors in their other hand give two swift cuts. If you want it to be curly the cuts will have to be diagonal. Again, do two cuts.

In order to know if all has been done right you merely need to tilt your head to and fro in order to feel the weight of each side. If it feels like both sides of your head are the same weight then you have done it successfully. Congratulations. You are now a graduate of the School of How to Use Thinning Scissors. Instead of a diploma you will receive a nice light head of hair. Now you can run fast, jump farther, and feel the wind again as it caresses your scalp.

Always remember that hair thinning scissors are no joke. They are typically a lot sharper than regular scissors so be very careful. You don’t want to go into this alone, so grab a friend and you two can figure it out on your own, with the help of these directions right here.

Notes for using thinning scissors

A thinning scissor is a very important implement in the overall scheme of the cosmetology that you are looking to get in with. It allows so much more freedom of expression and lightness of being. That is why you’re pursuing it in the first place. It works by cutting out “strips” without altering the look of the “do”. This is its whole function and it does it better than anything else because that’s what it was made to do. You can now strut down the avenue like a real model, knowing full well that your hair weighs just the right amount.

An important note that I forgot to mention earlier is that you always have to wet the person’s hair before doing anything to it. I mean just think about how can you cut dry hair? It will be a disaster. Nevertheless I think it’s important that we put this note in for the interest of complete accuracy.

Alternative instructions in using thinning scissors

An alternative way to do this whole process is as follows. Use hair clips and a fine-tooth comb in order to section off what we call a “panel” of hair. (This way will give more accuracy.) Move either one way or another, but always go through the hair in the same clockwise direction. It is so vital to follow these directions if you want to really de-volumize to the perfect extent. Sit in front of a mirror to “check” the work. Also by combing through it you will get an even more in depth look at the quality of the work.

By moving the thinning scissors in and out in this motion you will soon start to see it all coming together. There is nothing better than a successful (and free) haircut so don’t worry about spending an extra long time doing it. You will not come to regret it.

For stylists and their customers, it is important to remember that thinning scissors should never be used near the roots or ends of the hair because the scissors will not adequately remove volume.
